Recovery Tips with Steve McKenna

Apr 22, 2024

Meet Steve McKenna, one of our sponsored Groove athletes.

Steve is a seasoned triathlete with multiple Ironman and 70.3 championships under his belt, currently ranked #51 in the Professional Triathlete Organisation World Rankings. Now, let's hear Steve's top tips for recovery, learned through years of competing in tough triathlons.

"Taking a break from training for about five days helps me step away from my intense focus on exercise and cope with the ups and downs of preparing for and completing an Ironman event. Afterwards, I regain motivation by purposely avoiding the urge to constantly train, so I'm excited to get moving again."

"After about 4-5 days of rest, when my muscles aren't as sore anymore, I typically schedule a massage. Following this, I usually begin training again, and it's during this period that I notice significant improvements in my muscles' recovery and performance.

In the meantime, I prioritise activities like elevating my legs, stretching, using Endurance Recovery Boots, wearing 2XU compression gear, and taking frequent walks with my dog instead of focusing solely on moving blood around through training."

"I prioritise practical recovery over fashion or looks without any shame. You'll often find me wearing compression gear, calf sleeves, track pants, and Ascent Groove thongs every day, whether I'm at home or out and about. While this might seem odd to some, I care more about my recovery and foot health than what others think."

"I'm not the type to indulge in junk food as a reward after completing an Ironman, nor do I cut out certain foods to reach a specific 'race weight' during training. Instead, I prioritise eating healthily throughout the year, within reasonable limits. I generally avoid junk food because I've noticed it can increase inflammation in the body, especially after intense training sessions or Ironman events. This isn't something my body needs or craves. I find healthy foods just as delicious and satisfying."
